Fuel Price Hike Overnight

A Surprise fuel price increase by the government retail shops had an immediate effect on mid night at 14th August accroding to a driver who owns an CNG taxi. While he was queuing at 24-hour gas shop, mid night struck and instruction came to increase the gas price. A canister of natural gas containing 65 liters (17 gallons) was raised from 500 kyats (39 cents) to 2,500 kyats ($1.94).
Many taxies decided not to run the next day and watch out for more instruction.

The bus management committee rounded up the contractors and dividing them by asking who will continue to run. The group split with those who would run and those who would not run. Those who run decided to increase fares to double.
Right now the effect of this sudden change is appreantly on the general public who depended on public transport for day to day commute.
We will report further developments soon.
