Myanmar prepares for more tourists

Start­ing Octo­ber, Myan­mar expects more tourists as tourism author­i­ties take steps to be able to pro­vide bet­ter ser­vices like improved hotel ser­vices, smooth trans­port and com­mu­ni­ca­tion, tourist des­ti­na­tion upkeep, trained guides and rea­son­able taxi fare.

Since Myan­mar launched the “Visit Myan­mar Year” in 1996, there had been increases in tourist arrivals.

Rank­ing first are the vis­i­tors from China, next is Ger­many, then Spain, Nor­way, Thai­land, Cam­bo­dia and India.

Sin­ga­pore tops for­eign invest­ment in Myanmar’s hotel sec­tor, fol­lowed by Thai­land and Japan.

Myan­mar is plan­ning to intro­duce enter­tain­ment pro­grams in the Myan­mar tra­di­tional style in tourist sites like Yan­gon, Man­dalay, Bagan and Inlay.

For­eign invest­ment in the tourism sec­tor from Sin­ga­pore, Japan, Thai­land, Hongkong, Britain and Malaysia were real­ized through the “Visit Myan­mar Year” launched in 1996.

There are over 700 hotels and inns and about 700 tourism com­pa­nies oper­at­ing with over 4,000 multi-language speak­ing tourist guides in the coun­try accord­ing to the ministry.

Myan­mar is also mak­ing prepa­ra­tions to hold the first-ever Maha Mekong travel fair in the Bagan cul­tural site in Man­dalay this year in November.

Myan­mar will dis­play booths fea­tur­ing 11 asso­ci­a­tions under the Myan­mar Tourism Board or MTB show­ing dis­tinc­tive places, inter­na­tional stan­dard hotels, restau­rants and region-wise sou­venir shops in the country.

The Maha Mekong region con­sist­ing of China, Laos, Thai­land, Myan­mar, Viet­nam and Cam­bo­dia will dis­play their tourism sites dur­ing the show.
